Winter Safety
Tobogganing or sledding can be so much fun, if you think about safety first.
You should always wear either a ski or hockey helmet — not a bicycle helmet.
Use a sled or toboggan that you can steer yourself. Don’t use inner tubes, crazy carpets, flying saucers, garbage bags or cardboard boxes. They are difficult to control.
Always sit or kneel facing forward. Keep your hands, arms and legs inside the sled to prevent injuries.
Make sure the path is clear before going down the hill.
Don’t try to stop the toboggan with your hands and feet if you lose control. Roll to the side if you have to get off in a hurry.
Keep an eye out for oncoming sleds and quickly get out of the way when you reach the bottom.
Climb back up the hill by keeping to the side (away from where people are coming down).
Stay away from hills that are too steep and too icy.
Overcrowding a toboggan with too many riders can be very dangerous.
